Competitor Eligibility

Our Policy

Policy Rationale

What’S the purpose of the u of t cup?

The U of T Cup arose from a desire to fill a gap in mooting — at the time, mooting was available almost exclusively to law students. Since the inaugural U of T Cup in 2017, mooting has rapidly expanded to involve post-secondary university students. But there remain significant gaps in mooting: post-secondary college students and certificate students are underrepresented in moots. The U of T Cup Competitor Eligibility Policy arises from a desire to fill that gap.

U of T Cup Competitor Eligibility Policy

To compete at the U of T Cup, both team members must meet all four of the following eligibility requirements…

REQUIREMENT 1: CURRENTLY ENROLLED

At the U of T Cup, teams of two represent their post-secondary university or college, so both team members must be currently enrolled students at that same institution. However, there is no specific diploma, certificate, or bachelor program required to compete at the U of T Cup. We welcome mooters from a variety of academic faculties and backgrounds!

REQUIREMENT 2: no Masters, JD, LLB, or equivalent

Current or previous graduate school/law school students may not compete. That means you cannot be currently enrolled or previously enrolled in a Masters, Juris Doctor (JD), LLB, or equivalent program.

REQUIREMENT 3: not a licensed paralegal

If you’ve already received your paralegal license, you may not compete. But, if you’re otherwise enrolled in a college paralegal program, you’re welcome to compete.

REQUIREMENT 4: NOT SEEKING NCA ACCREDITATION

If you are a current applicant in the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) system, seeking to transfer foreign legal credentials, you may not compete. This provision applies to law students who are in the NCA process for a law program outside of Canada and law students who are in the NCA process for a Canadian civil law program (i.e., for the Québec Bar) alike.
