U of T Mooting Cup

WELCOME BACK!

The University of Toronto Cup is an annual two-day undergraduate mooting competition dedicated to the pursuit of progress and excellence in law. Each year, the U of T cup brings together competitors from across the nation. In partnership with the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, we are proud to host the eighth annual U of T Cup in on February 1st–2nd, 2025. The tournament case and weekend will be announced very soon… this month.

Many undergraduate students express an interest in the law, but there are often few opportunities to engage with it in the way mooting does. The U of T Cup allows students to begin developing and honing skills that they will take with them to law school and beyond. In this way, students have the opportunity to engage with critical legal issues early on in their educational journeys. Beyond supporting growth in understanding of the law, we also hope to continue the tradition of years past: kindling connections between competitors, legal students, and legal professionals.

We look forward to welcoming all judges, competitors, volunteers and spectators to this year’s Cup, which we hope can give everyone a new or rekindled appreciation for the law. We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to host another phenomenal weekend of competition.

2025 U of T CUP CASE: Canada (Attorney General) v. Power.

Summary of the case: After Joseph Power sought damages from the Crown for legislation which unconstitutionally disqualified him from a record suspension, in Canada v. Power (2024 SCC 26), a 5-4 Court held that the Crown is not immune from liability when an impugned law is clearly unconstitutional, in bad faith, or an abuse of power — that is, parliamentary sovereignty does not put the Crown above the constitution even in terms of damages.

Keynote Speaker: to be announced.

Champion: to be announced.
